PACC
Leaders at a Rally
About
PACC
embraces a vision in which people strive together to build an
equitable, diverse, engaged, and flourishing community in central Brooklyn.
In our work as a community development corporation, PACC pursues five
major goals:
-
first, to preserve and
develop safe and affordable housing, a basic human right;
-
second, to support a vibrant local
commerce through which small businesses serve the market needs of
community residents;
-
third, to sustain and develop an economic,
racial, and cultural diversity that can enrich the lives of all;
-
fourth, to promote knowledge, initiative,
and concerted action that can advance individual and common interests;
and
-
fifth, to foster an ethic that all members
of the community bear personal responsibility to contribute to the
greater good.
Our Foundational Values
People have a right to a share of society’s resources that
will enable them to lead dignified and productive
lives. People have a responsibility to contribute
to the community’s welfare in proportion to the
benefits they gain from the opportunities that
society provides. People have an interest in the
enhanced quality of life that participating in the
good community can provide.
Our
Vision of the Good Community in
Central Brooklyn
In
the good community, people have access to quality
education, to good jobs, and to safe and affordable
housing. The good community is diverse
economically, racially, and culturally. In the good
community, reaping the benefits of their diversity,
people can learn from each other, trade with each
other, and strive together in identifying and
pursuing common interest. In the good community,
people embrace the pursuit of equality and justice
through an ideal of personal responsibility and
collective action. In the good community, market
forces are tempered by purposeful and coordinated
efforts of grass roots activists, community
development professional, socially responsible
businesses, and progressive public officials, toward
balancing the virtues of continuity and change. In
the good community, people have equal opportunity to
influence
public policy through voting and other political
activities, toward establishing the framework within
which people can flourish, pursuing both individual
fulfillment and the greater good.
Our Role in Contributing to the Good Community
PACC is a community development corporation that
contributes to the development of the good community
through three major strategies:
First, we seek to preserve and create
affordable housing, because fulfilling the
fundamental right to affordable housing is a
cornerstone for establishing human well-being,
preventing displacement, and enhancing economic,
racial, and cultural diversity.
Second, we seek to promote and support the development of small businesses
and vibrant commercial corridors, because such
economic development is an engine of opportunity
that can create jobs for community residents, bring
better services to our neighborhoods, and otherwise
enhance our community as a place to live.
Third, we seek to inform, to organize, and to galvanize members of the
community, because residents, acting together toward
common objectives, can oppose unnecessary
displacement, demand accountability from private
developers and public officials, and otherwise
contribute to the greater good.
