Social
Services
In
addition to managing affordable housing, PACC has branched
out to provide supportive housing, and our Department of
Social Services provides essential services to participating
clients. Many of our clients are formerly homeless, living
with chronic illnesses, and/or in need of mental health
support and assistance in navigating the complex healthcare
and government entitlement benefit system to achieve
independent living.
The
Department works collaboratively with local Brooklyn social
services agencies as well as other non-profit entities in
the remaining four boroughs to ensure the progress of its
clients. Clients play an important role in their treatment
planning and caring for themselves. We work to provide tools
and skills to clients and assist them in remaining healthy,
with complementary services such as hot meals,
pain-management, acupuncture, nutrition, and physical
fitness programs.
Responsive
and compassionate care forms the core of our social service
work. Experienced social workers are present
during business hours to support clients, and on call after
hours in cases of emergencies. A case manager is available
to provide concrete services such as emergency food
provision and assistance in applying for entitlement
services. Clients also receive home visits and mental health
support, and are accompanied to medical appointments.
Supported
by the NYC Human Resource Administration and private funders,
the Department of Social Services is a teaching social work
program. Schools such as NYU’s Graduate School of Social
Work, CUNY's Hunter School of Social Work and the Brooklyn Education Opportunity Center are some of
the institutions working with the Department to provide
learning opportunities to their students. Staff-interns
receive full accommodation to practice and learn on their
placements.
